Photo update! House on former Frank Llyod Wright residence in Gold Coast still under construction

Single family home construction at 25 East Cedar in Gold Coast taken last week, November 25th, 2014.  Bob DePalma, Broker, Kale Realty
We've photographed this property and watched the construction at 25 East Cedar in Gold Coast for some time.

It's rare to have new construction single family homes in Gold Coast among the historic row houses. That the original property that stood here has had a little bit of a controversial past (including the new construction next door to the west) has added to the interest in this home.  The purchase and tear down process started in 2011.

Update on Frank Lloyd Wright "love shack" house: 25 East Cedar in Gold Coast

There was much to do over the sale and demolition of a Gold Coast home tied to Frank Lloyd Wright a few years ago.  The "love shack" property had been purchased and torn down to make way for a rare new construction single family home on the doorstep of Gold Coast action.

Here's an update photo of the house construction at 25 East Cedar I took from last week. Although the demolition of the site was in 2011, there is still much work to do.  The home next door to the west at 21 East Cedar is listed for sale at $5,000,000.

Gold Coast new construction house wrapped for winter: 25 East Cedar

After meeting a client we stopped for an update photo of the somewhat infamous 25 East Cedar new construction location (once tied to Frank Lloyd Wright).

25 East Cedar is a rare new Gold Coast construction house.  All wrapped up in plastic and not ready for the reveal.

What a location!

Update! New Gold Coast construction on "former Frank Lloyd Wright" plot

Nice location (Photo Bob DePalma)

Bob snapped a couple update photos of 25 East Cedar... the infamous Gold Coast tear down property that was linked to Frank Lloyd Wright.  A new single family residence is being built in this more than prime location (super prime for us anyway).

New construction in Gold Coast is rare and inherently interesting to us.  It's probably the most desirable ($$$) and best know neighborhood in Chicago. This new house, for better or worse, will be one for the ages.

Wright's Gold Coast "love shack" gone for good

Only a birdhouse now remains at 25 East Cedar. Workers repair the adjacent property brick.

We've been posting updates and photos of the significant property at 25 East Cedar in the Gold Coast.  The home was associated with Frank Lloyd Wright.  Not that he designed the late 19th Century coach house it, but it's mentioned as a place he shacked up a bit. The existing structure has now been torn down completely despite some speculation that some of the facade may be retained.

More significant in our eyes is the fact that someone snapped up this "location of all locations" at 25 East Cedar for about $1.5 million early this year and is now building a custom home in the heart of the Gold Coast.

Here are the photos we've taken over the past 6 months.

Update on historic Gold Coast property: Demo of 25 East Cedar by hand

Demo three weeks ago

Demo today

Bob took a few more photos today of the progress at 25 East Cedar in the epicenter of Gold Coast. Hand removal of brick and slow demolition continues on 25 East Cedar…the facade still stands at the moment. See the before photo above from a few weeks ago and the careful demolition leaving the original facade in tact from today.

25 East Cedar in Gold Coast: Rare, controversial new construction update

Bob took these update photos of 25 East Cedar in Gold Coast over the weekend. A wrecking/ demolition permit was issued in June to "WRECK & REMOVE 2 STORY BRICK BUILDING HOUSE". From the current state of partial demolition, it almost looks like a renovation was attempted at first than scrapped. You can see the steel beams, plywood and vapor wrap from our bird's eye view.

It's quite rare to see a new construction single family home in Chicago's Gold Coast. Imagine your single family home practically on Lake Michigan to your east and the bustle surrounding Mariano Park to your west. Carmichael's anyone?

25 East Cedar has been the subject of some controversy in the past as written by Dennis Rodkin in his Deal Estate column. Some folks felt the age of the property and association to Frank Lloyd Wright may merit preservation.

The last five sales of single family homes and two to three unit multi-family buildings have ranged from $1,500,000 for 25 East Cedar shown here closed early this year to $5,300,000 for a double lot renovated mansion at 60 East Cedar sold in 2007. A luxury new construction home was built adjacent to the west of 25 East Cedar in 2007.

UPDATE:

Here are some blackberry camera shots of 25 East Cedar I took on a stop with clients on Friday. I did not have my regular camera, but you can get a little view of the block, a sense of scale of the existing house and the new construction next door.
