Northeastern Illinois University hosts Political Science Career Day, Andy Shaw

Dr. Ellen Cannon and Dr. David Leaman with Andy Shaw at Northeastern Illinois University last Thursday.

I had the pleasure of attending a packed house presentation by Andy Shaw and the Better Government Association sponsored by the Northeastern Illinois University Department of Political Science on November 4th. The BGA presentation in the campus' attractive Student Union building was part of a full Career Day event featuring panels and speakers from the fields of law, government, business and education. This was a fantastic networking and educational event facilitated by the university.

Mr. Shaw, formerly a long time journalist and broadcaster for ABC Channel 7, now is Executive Director of the not-for-profit Better Government Association. His presentation focused on the job they do in investigating waste and corruption. With the major newspapers laying off journalists and investigative reporters, the BGA is helping to step in. The BGA is also launching a pretty innovative web site with "call to action" prompts. I look forward to seeing the impact of this technology on government oversight.

Mr. Shaw gave a great presentation with insight to the BGA mission, running a not-for-profit and technology employed in their efforts.

As an NEIU alumnus I enjoy the many programs, conferences and seminars held at the campus. There are also many opportunities to give and participate in the university community whenever possible. The campus is impressive and located conveniently on the north side of Chicago at 5500 North St Louis Avenue. Please make Northeastern Illinois University a consideration in your family's educational advancement in Chicago.
