I was excited to once again sponsor and serve on the planning committee for the 51st Chuck Kane Scholarship Golf Event with Northeastern Illinois University. The event was hosted at beautiful Bryn Mawr Country Club on July 29th. I had a great group of clients and business associates join me to compete for the 1st Place Golden Eagle Bobblehead (we were not close).

This was our first year at Bryn Mawr Country Club on Chicago's North Side and we could not had a better facility.  The lounge, bar, locker rooms, patio and banquet areas are fantastic.  The course is in terrific condition and the fore caddies that were super fun!

We heard from our newly hired university President Katrina Bell-Jordan  in her first official event with NEIU! The student scholarship recipient speakers at the dinner program were phenomenal!

My group had another great time playing and sponsoring NEIU Chuck Kane Scholarship Golf Event yesterday (quickly distancing after the photo!). Special thanks to Steve Dunnett, Blueleaf Lending and Nick Patterson, Owner, Kale Realty for joining me as Welcome Kit Sponsors.

It's been a long five months! Despite some challenges Northeastern Illinois University was able to pull off their 48th Annual Chuck Kane Scholarship Golf Event. There was little gathering together at the sold out event but we all enjoyed seeing a few familiar faces as we made our way to the course. The university staff and Wilmette Golf Club were terrific hosts making for a very welcomed round!

We were happy to earmark scholarship dollars to the Alumni Travel Study Scholarship. The award, founded few years ago by myself and fellow alumni, helps students pay for study abroad trips!

After graduating from Northeastern Illinois University in the North Park neighborhood of Chicago I've had the chance to be involved with the university on many levels.  This year my colleagues and I took the opportunity to step up our contributions. Kale Realty, Inkt Marketing and Steve Dunnett of Blueleaf Lending are the Northeastern Illinois University Welcome Sponsors for this year's Chuck Kane Scholarship Golf Event this Monday June 18th, 2018.  

I joined alumni Ellen Larrimore and Chuck Good to establish the new Alumni Travel Study Scholarship.

Proceeds from our sponsorship will support the newly established Alumni Study Tour Scholarship.

Chicago Reptile Fest 2017 this weekend in North Park!

Chicago Reptile Fest 2017 is being hosted by Northeastern Illinois University 5500 N St Louis Ave Chicago IL 60625 this weekend (NOW) April 8th and 9th.  Click the link for more info and hours!  This is a really unique event in the North Park neighborhood near Lincoln Square.

I just signed up for the Chuck Kane Memorial Golf Outing supporting Northeastern Illinois University

For several years I've sponsored a foursome at the NEIU Chuck Kane Memorial Golf Outing.  There is still time to sign up for a great day of golf on Monday August 17th at Chevy Chase Golf Club in Wheeling.  This year's dinner speaker is Northeastern Illinois University Alum Tom Corfman of Crain's Chicago Business.  I'm excited to hear him talk especially in these times of school budget cuts.

The new Dero bike fixit stations at NEIU. I visit the Northeastern Illinois University campus to work-out at the fitness complex, participate in conferences and to volunteer as an Alumni Association Board Member.  The university is always making improvements and adding new features.  I ride my bike often to the university and on work errands.  The stations send a great message for "car-less" commuting!

Northeastern Illinois University Campus Recreation

The Northeastern Illinois University recreation complex offers affordable memberships to community members.  For discounted memberships as an alum contact the NEIU Alumni Association.   Contact the Campus Recreation at 773-442-4135 or stop in at 5500 N St. Louis Avenue in Chicago for program brochures and a facility tour.

The campus recreation center has tons of sports equipment to borrow for basketball, racquetball, soccer and specialized sports.  The gyms, indoor track and swimming pool facility are great and the fitness room well equipped.  The campus also host kid's summer camps and other third party programs on the NEIU grounds. 

NEIU also sponsors 5K runs, hosts various sports leagues and special events for adults throughout the year.

My group had a blast on August 20th at the 40th Annual Chuck Kane Memorial Golf Outing.  The outing grew 30% over last year!

North Park single family homes near Northeastern Illinois University

Consider the pretty little enclave of bungalows, tutors, cottages and two-flats in North Park community area near the Northeastern Illinois University campus when looking for homes on the North Side.

Chicago brick bungalow houses within a few blocks of the university have sold for $200,000 to $425,000 in the last 12 months.  Some small raised ranches have sold from $150,000 to $200,000.  The lower of the price scale will get you a fairly original brick bungalow without a finished attic space or small raised ranch house. The $400,000 range will get you a relatively large home with finished second floor and modern updates.  At the moment, there are three brick bungalows available within two blocks of NEIU listed from $250,000 to $460,000.

The streets around Northeastern Illinois University are quiet and tree-lined.  Many home owners have extensive landscaping around their homes enhancing the local atmosphere.  The college itself offers pretty grounds to walk and many activities for the public including lectures, a top notch theater experience, music and a recreation center with public membership.

I recently joined the Northeastern Illinois University Physical Education complex as an alum of the school and enrolled my son in swimming lessons.  The university offers community memberships, swim lessons and discounted programs for alumni. The complex has one of the biggest pools in the area, locker facilities, racquetball courts, weight and cardio room, three full size basketball courts and an auxiliary gym with climbing equipment, indoor running track, outdoor tennis courts and more.


As a member of the NEIU Alumni Advisory Board, I stay active with the university in many ways. It feels great that I can take my kids to my college for swim lessons. If you are either a community member or alumni, the university offers fitness membership options.  As parents, you do not have to be a member to enroll your kids in swim lessons.

The former Ruth Duckworth home at 3845 N Ravenswood.  Photo taken early this month.

Renowned sculptor Ruth Duckworth's enormous former loft/ studio home at 3845 N Ravenswood in Lakeview is now a gut renovation in progress. The industrial building turned live/work loft on a 50x108 lot was sold for $1.2 million in December 2009.  Ms. Duckworth passed away in 2009 soon after the house was listed for sale. I was an admirer of Ms. Duckworth's work and met her in 2005 at an art installation ceremony at Northeastern Illinois University.

 

The late 2009 sale of $1.2 million was comparably a bit high for a lot of this size, location and property features (with unconventional space and only one and one half baths).  However, the new owner may have been able to purchase some original sculpture that remained in the workshop.  You may also view some of Ms. Duckworth's original tile in Dennis Rodkin's Deal Estate video that will hopefully be re-used in the new single family home.  The demolition and building permits for an addition have eliminated the original mature garden on the rear of the short lot.

The property is at a convenient and aesthetically interesting location. The mixed residential and industrial stretches of the North Ravenswood corridor coupled with the many gardens along the Metra track embankment make one of the more unique settings on the North Side. This is close to grocery, CTA Brown Line and various Lakeview and Northcenter retail, restaurants and services all within a few blocks.
